History 1310: US History to 1877

This is an online course that requires no on-campus class meetings.

This survey course examines American history from the earliest inhabitants to the period following the Civil War. The course focuses on a central theme: the changing nature of the meaning of freedom. We will explore this theme as we consider major political, economic, and societal trends, and key events.

This course has a multicultural designation, which means that in addition to politics, wars, and people who have achieved lasting fame, we will spend a significant amount of time exploring the diversity of the American people, and the conflicts generated by that diversity. We will examine sources that illuminate different perspectives, inclusive of those who may not have had a political voice at the time.
